register company with COIDA - R1299

All employers who employ one or more workers, in a business or farm, are required by law to register with the Compensation Fund ( COIDA).

This basically means that the Compensation Fund lists you on their database as a South African Company which has a work environment that qualifies for employees to work in.

The result of the registration process is your first assessment and once this is paid you can then receive a letter of good standing valid until the end of the current financial year when the next assessment becomes due.

When completing your initial registration form, you will be asked for the nature of your business. This will determine the risk factor related to your business. This factor as well as the salary amount paid by your company, will be used to calculate the contribution owing.

If you are registered and your fees are up to date, your Company and Employees will be covered in the case of any workplace injuries.

If any employee gets injured on duty; or becomes sick with ‘Occupational Diseases’, the employer will be protected against civil claims. Most contracts and tenders require that the company needs COID Registration before he/she can apply for any contracts/tenders. Employees who are injured on duty or those who contracted occupational diseases can claim compensation for temporary or permanent disablement. These claims will be awarded per the degree of disablement or death.

Obtain Letter of Good Standing from COIDA - R699

If an employer is registered with the Compensation Fund as per section 80 of the COID Act, one can apply for a Letter of Good Standing from the Compensation Fund. This letter states that there is no outstanding claim/debt on the Compensation Fund record.

To apply for most contracts and tenders, your Company will need to submit a Letter of Good Standing which is received from the Compensation Fund.

Submission of return of earnings - R300

All employers who are registered at the Compensation Fund, need to Submit and Pay their Annual Fees. Without successful submission and payment of these annual fees, the Compensation Fund will not issue the company with a Letter of Good standing.

When completing your initial registration form, you will be asked for the nature of your business. This will determine the risk factor related to your business. This factor as well as the salary amount paid by your company, will be used to calculate the contribution owing.
